Do These 30 Things If You Want to Be Unstoppable
Do unterstellung 30 Things If You Want to Be Unstoppable Article by Benjamin P. HardyA lot of people are good at what they do. Some are even elite. A select few are completely unstoppable. Those who are unstoppable are in their own world. They dont compete with anyone but themselves. You never know what they will do only that you will be forced to respond. Even though they dont compete with you, they make you compete with them. Are you unstoppable? By the end of this blog, you will be.1. Dont Think Know and ActDont think. You already know what you have to do, and you know how to do it. Whats stopping you? ?Tim Grover, author of Relentless From Good to Great to UnstoppableRather than analyzing and thinking, you should act. Attuned to your senses, and with complete trust in yourself, do what you instinctively feel you should. As Oprah has said, Every right decision I have ever made has come from my gut. Every wrong decision Ive made welches the result of me notlage listening to the greater voice of myself. The moment you abflug thinking, youve already lost. Thinking swiftly pulls you out of the zone.2. Always Be Prepared So You Have the Freedom to Act on InstinctJust as the yin-yang symbol possesses a kernel of light in the dark and of dark in the light, creative leaps are grounded in a technical foundation.? ?Josh Waitzkin, author of The Art of Learning An Inner Journey to Optimal PerformanceBecome a master of your craft. While everyone else is relaxing, youre practicing and perfecting. Learn the left-brained rules in and out so your right brain can have limitless freedom to break the rules and create. With enhanced consciousness, time will slow down for you. Youll see things in several more frames than others. While theyre trying to react to the situation, youll be able to manipulate and tweak the situation to your liking.3. Dont Be Motivated by Money (or Anything External)Having nice things is, well, nice. But for you, its neve r been about the money, prestige, or anything else outside of you. Take unterstellung things away and nothing changes for you. Youre still going to be pushing your personal limits and giving it your all. Give these things to you, and they wont destroy you like they do fruchtwein people.4. Never Be SatisfiedThe drive to close the gap between near-perfect and perfect is the difference between great and unstoppable. ?Tim GroverEven after you achieve a goal, youre not content. For you, its not even about the goal. Its about the climb to see how far you can push yourself.Does this make you ungrateful? Absolutely not. Youre entirely humbled and grateful for everything in your life. Which is why you will never get complacent or lazy.5. Always Be in ControlUnlike most people, who are dependent on substances or other external factors, you are in control of what you put in your body, how you spend your time, and how long you stay in the zone.Act based on instinct, not impulse. Just because y ou could doesnt mean you do. And when you do, its because you want to, not because you have to.6. Be True to YourselfAlthough 70 percent of U.S. employees hate their jobs and only one in three Americans report being happy, relentless and unstoppable people purge everything they hate from their lives.Have the self-respect and confidence to live life on your terms. When something isnt right in your life, change it. Immediately.7. Never Let Off the PressurePressure can bust pipes, but it also can make diamonds. ? ?Tim GroverMost people can handle pressure in small doses. But when left to their own devices, they let off the pressure and relax. Not you. You never take the pressure off yourself. Instead, you continuously turn-up the pressure. Its what keeps you alert and active.8. Dont be afraid of FailureMost people stay close to the ground, where its safe. If they fall, it wont hurt that badly. But when you choose to fly high, the fall may kill you. And youre okaywith that. To you, there is no ceiling and there is no floor. Its all in your head. If something goes wrong if you fail you adjust and keep going. 9. Dont Compete With Others. Make Them Compete With YouMost people are competing with other people. They continuously check in to see what others in their space (their competition) are doing. As a result, they mimic whats working for others.Conversely, youve left all competition behind. Competing with others makes absolutely zero sense to you. It pulls you from your authentic zone. So you zone out all the external noise and zone in to your internal pressure to produce.10. Never Stop LearningOrdinary people seek entertainment. Extraordinary people seek education. When you want to become the best at what you do, you never stop learning. You never stop improving and honing your skills and knowledge.Your unparalleled preparation is what gives you power. No one else is willing to pay the price youve paid.11. Success Isnt Enough It Only Increases the PressureFor mos t people, becoming successful is enough. However, when youre relentless, success only increases the pressure to do more. Immediately following the achievement of a goal, youre focused on your next challenge.12. Dont Get Crushed by SuccessSuccess can become a catalyst for failure. ?Greg McKeown, author of Essentialism The Disciplined Pursuit of LessMost people cant handle success, authority, or privilege. These thingsdestroys them. These thingsmake them lazy. When most peopleget what they want, they stop doing the very things that got them there. The external noise becomes too intense. But for you, no external noise can push harder than your own internal pressure. Its not about this achievement, but the one after, and the one after that. There is no destination. Only when youre finished.13. Completely Own It When You Screw UpImplementing extreme ownership requires checking your ego and operating with a high degree of humility. Admitting mistakes, taking ownership and developing a pla n to overcome challenges are integral to any successful team. Jocko Willink, author of Extreme Ownership How U.S. Navy SEALs Lead and WinNo blame. No deception or illusion. Just the cold, hard truth. When you mess up, you own it. And as the leader, you own it when your team fails. Only with extreme ownership can you have complete freedom and control.14. Let Your Work Speak for ItselfWell done, is well said.? Anthony Liccione, poet and authorCal Newports recent book, Deep Work, distinguishes deep work from shallow work. Heres the differenceDeep work is- Rare- High value- Non-replicable (i.e., not easy to copy/outsource)Shallow work is-Common- Low value- Replicable (i.e., anyone can do it)Talking is shallow. Anyone can do it. Its easily replicated. Its low value. Conversely, deep work is rare. Its done by people who are focused and working while everyone else is talking. Deep work is so good it cant be ignored. It doesnt need words. It speaks for itself.15. Always Work on Your Mental StrengthMental resilience is arguably the most critical trait of a world-class performer, and it should be nurtured continuously. Left to my own devices, I am always looking for ways to become more and more psychologically impregnable. When uncomfortable, my instinct is not to avoid the discomfort but to become at peace with it. My instinct is always to seek out challenges as opposed to avoiding them. ?Josh WaitzkinThe better you can be under pressure, the further youll go than anyone else because theyll crumble under pressure. The best training you will ever do is mental training. Wherever your mind goes, your body follows. Wherever your thoughts go, your life follows.16. Confidence Is Your Greatest AssetYouve heard it before Running a marathon is far more mental than physical. A persons ability to andrang a marathon or do anything hard is more a reflection of their level of confidence than their actual ability.Your confidence determines- The size of the challenges/goals you un dertake- How likely you are toachieve those goals- How well you bounce back from failuresIf youre not confident, you will never put yourself out there in the first place. When youre confident, you dont care how many times you fail Youre going to succeed. And it doesnt matter how stacked the odds seem against you.17. Surround Yourself With People Who Make You Think ofthe Future, Not the PastWhen you surround yourself with people who remind you of your past, youll have a hard time progressing. This is why we get stuck in certain rolesthatwe cant seem to break free from.Surrounding yourself with people whom you want to be like givesyou a clean slate. Youre no longer defined by your past only by the future you are creating.18. Let Things Go, But Never ForgetBeing unstoppable requires carrying no unnecessary mental or emotional baggage. Consequently, youll need to immediately and completely forgive anyone who has wronged you. However, forgiveness doesnt mean you forget. And it doesnt me an you have to do further business with those who have wronged you.19. Have Clear GoalsWhile a fixation on results is certainly unhealthy, short-term goals can be useful developmental tools if they are balanced within a nurturing long-term philosophy.? ?Josh WaitzkinAccording to loads of psychological research, the most motivating goals are clearly defined and time-bound.Your goals can either be focused on your behaviors (e.g., Im going to write 500 words per day) or on the outcomes youre seeking (e.g., Im going to get published in The New York Times by June 1, 2016).For most people, behaviorally focused goals are the better and more motivating option. But when you crave the results so much that the work is irrelevant, your aim should be directed straight at the outcomes you want. However, results-focused goals are better when short-term and grounded in your long-term geistesbild and philosophy. When your why is strong enough, the how will take care of itself.20. Respond Immediately , Rather Than Analyzing or StallingAnticipation of an event is always more extreme than the event itself both for positive and negative events.Just do it. Train yourself to respond immediately when you feel you should do something. Stop questioning yourself. Dont analyze it. Dont question if it came from God or from yourself. Just act.Youll figure out what to do after youve taken action. Until you take action, it will all be hypothetical. But once you act, it becomes practical.21. Choose Simplicity Over ComplicationIts easy to be complicated. Most of the research and jargon in academia and business ismore complicated than it needs to be.Cutting to the core and hitting the truth is hard, because its simple. Very few people will give you the truth. When you ask them a question, it gets mighty complicated. There are so many variables, or It depends, they say.T. S. Eliot said it best, Where is the wisdom we have lost in knowledge? Where is the knowledge we have lost in information?Wisd om is timeless and simple. Learn wisdom and choose it.22. Never Be Jealous or Envious of Someone Elses AccomplishmentsBeing unstoppable means you genuinely want whats best for everyone even those you would consider your competitors. Jealousy and envy are the ego, which operates out of fear. The reason you are happy for other peoples success is because their success has nothing to do with you. You are in control of you. And you are different from every other person. There is no one who can do exactly what you can do. You have your own superpower with your own unique ability to contribute.23. Take the Shot Every TimeIf I fail more than you, I win. tischseth Godin, author and marketerYou miss every shot you dont take. And most people dont want to take the shot. Fear of failure paralyzes them. The only way you can become unstoppable is if you stop thinking about it. Just take the shot. Dont do it only when its convenient or when you feel ready. Just go and make whatever adjustments you need after the fact.24. Dont Get Caught Up in the Results of Your SuccessAlways remain focused on what got you those results the work. When you start doing noteworthy stuff, there are benefits that can become distractions. It can get easy to ride the wave of your previous work. Keep practicing. Perfect your craft. Never forget what got you here.25. Think and Act 10XWhen 10X is your measuring stick, you immediately see how you can bypass what everyone else is doing. Dan Sullivan, founder of Strategic CoachMost people even those you deem to be world class are not operating at 10X. In truth, you could surpass anyone if you radically stretched your thinking and belief system.Going 10X changes everything. As Dan Sullivan has said, 10X thinking automatically takes you outside the box of your present obstacles and limitations. It pulls you out of the problems most people are dealing with and opens you to an entirely new field of possibilities. When you take your goal of earning $100,000 t his year and change it to $1,000,000, youre forced to operate at a different level. The logical and traditional approach doesnt work with 10X. As Shane Snow, author of Smartcuts How Hackers, Innovators, and Icons Accelerate Success, has said, 10X progress is built on bravery and creativity instead. Working smarter. The question is Are you willing to go there? Not just entertain the thought for a second or two and then revert back to common thinking. No. Are you willing to sit with 10X thinking? Are you willing to question your own thought processes and open yourself to believing an entirely different set of possibilities?Could you convince yourself to believe in your 10X potential? Are you willing to undertake goals that seems lunacy, to you and everyone else? Are you willing to take the mental leap, trusting the universe will conspire to make it happen?26. Set Goals That Far Exceed Your Current CapabilitiesYou need to aim beyond what you are capable of. You need to develop a complet e disregard for where your abilities end. If you think youre unable to work for the best company in its sphere, make that your aim. If you think youre unable to be on the cover of Timemagazine, make it your business to be there. Make your vision of where you want to be a reality. Nothing is impossible.? ?Paul Arden, author of Its Not How Good You Are, Its How Good You Want to BeIf your goals are logical, they wont force you to create luck. Being unstoppable means your goals challenge you to be someone more than you currently are. As Jim Rohn has said, Dont wish it wereeasier, wish you were better.27. Make Time for Recovery and RejuvenationWherever you are, make sure youre there. ?Dan SullivanWhen you focus on results rather than on being busy, youre 100 percent on when youre working and 100 percent off when youre not. This not only allows you to be present in the moment, but it also allows you to take the time you need to rest and recover.Your ability to work at a high level is lik e fitness. If you never take a break between sets, you wont be able to build strength, stamina, and endurance. However, not all rest produces recovery. Certain things are more soothing than others.Recovering from my work generally consists of writing in my journal, listening to music, spending time with my wife and kids, preparing and eating delicious food, or serving other people. These things rejuvenate me. They make my work both possible and meaningful.28. Start Before Youre ReadyThe best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago. The second best time is now.? ?Chinese ProverbMost people wait. They believe they can start after they have enough time, money, connections, and credentials. They wait until they feel secure. Not people who are unstoppable.Unstoppable people started last year. They started five years ago before they even knew what they were doing. They started before they had any money. They started before they had all the answers. They started when no one else believed in them. The only permission they needed was the voice inside them prompting them to move forward. And they moved.29. If You Need Permission, You Probably Shouldnt Do ItA mentor of mine is a highly successful real estate investor. Throughout his career, hes had hundreds of people ask him if they should go into real estate. He tells every one of them the same thing that they shouldnt do it. In fact, he actually tries talking most of them out of it. And in most cases, he succeeds. Why would he do that? Those who are going to succeed will do so regardless of what I say, he told me.I know so many people who chase whatever worked for other people. They never truly decide what they want to do and end up jumping from one thing to the next trying to strike quick gold. Almost always, it turns out thatthey stop digging when theyre just a few feet from the gold and they dont even realize it.No one will ever give you permission to live your dreams.30. Dont Make ExceptionsZig Ziglar used to tell a story of traveling one day and not getting in bed until 4 A.M. An hour and a half later (530), his alarm went off. He said, Every fiber of my being was telling me to stay in bed. But he had made a commitment, so he got up anyway. Admittedly, he had a horrible day and wasnt productive at all.Yet, he says that decision changed his life. As he explainsHad I bowed to my human, physical, emotional, and mental desire to sleep in, I would have made that exception. A week later, I might have made an exception if I only got four hours of sleep. A week later, maybe I only got seven hours of sleep. The exception so many times becomes the rule. Had I slept in, I wouldve faced that danger. Watch those exceptionsHence, Zig was unstoppable. From this point, your strategy is to make everyone else get on your level. Youre not going down to theirs. Youre not competing with anyone else ever again. Theyre going to have to compete with you. From now on, the end result is all that matters. ?Tim GroverWh en youre unstoppable, you will make sure to get what you want. Everything you need to know is already within you. All you need to do is trust yourself and act.Are you unstoppable?A version of this article originally appeared on SUCCESS.com.Benjamin P. Understanding Telecommuting Employers Expectations
Understanding Telecommuting Employers ExpectationsUnderstanding Telecommuting Employers ExpectationsFor whatever reason, if you are reading this, you have probably already made the decision to search for a telecommuting job. You may have already dedicated yourself to applying to every online job that you hear about hoping to increase your chances of landing something good soon. As you fill out applications, email resumes and spend time in community forums, job sites and other places where talk about telecommuting is plentiful, have you thought about what it is that employers are actually looking for? Taking a moment to consider telecommuting employers expectations with potential candidates can go a long way as far as giving you the edge in your job seeking efforts. Here are some tips to help you get into the minds of the telecommuting employers out there from someone who has been on the other sideDoes your resume give a good first impression?Yes, youve probably heard it a hundred time s or more, but please if you do one thing in your job search, present yourself as professionally as possible via your resume. That means take time to format your resume in an easy-to-read way, include only the information that an employer needs to get an impression of you and please use the spell-check feature before sending your resume zipping into cyberspace.Do you have the actual skills and qualifications for the job? Just because you see a telecommuting job listed someplace, doesnt mean that you have the skills or qualifications to do the job. Be sure to read the job description carefully to determine if you have what the employer is looking for in the first place. If you dont, then please dont expect a response because you are just wasting yours and the hiring departments time. If you see a job that you really want, then get the skills you need and then apply. That can be as simple as taking a few low-cost courses online or taking on some volunteer work to get the experience or credentials you need.Do you follow up? Believe it or not, human resources departments are staffed by actual people and those people are generally overworked, stressed and trying to keep track of everyone who applies. With companies that allow telecommuting, this is quadrupled as they get a steady flow of applicants by the hundreds daily. If you apply for a job, keep track of when you applied and follow up on a bi-weekly basis by sending a quick and polite email to the hiring department until you get some kind of response. Anything more than that is too much, but not sending a follow-up may say you are not really interested.Readers, how do you address telecommuting employers expectations in your job applications?

Resume Based Questions in Interviews
Resume Based Questions in InterviewsResume Based Questions in InterviewsLet us start by looking at the fruchtwein common question of allTell me a little about yourself. It is one of the first questions you are likely to be asked. Try to answer it without giving too little or too much information. Although stay true to facts that youve mentioned in your resume. You can share some of your personal information including your hobbies and interest along with other important things like your skills etc. in such a way that reflects you. But make sure you dontend up giving him the history of your life.Next most likely question to be asked by therecruiter can be,The reason why are you letting go of your previous company? This can become a tricky question even for most confident candidates. Key for answering this question is behonest whatever the reason may be. Next never bad mouth the company or person(s) or any related reason for which you ket the company let you go. Moreover try to give the r easons in a positive sense like, youd like to work in a more team-oriented environment etc. And most importantly try to keep it short while focusing on your new opportunity.Elaborate about the objectives youvewritten in your resume. The interviewer may ask you specifically about the objectivesyouve written in your resume. They may even ask you about the reason for a specific objective which youve written in your resume. Furthermore, they can ask you for your professional goals or your future plans in their company. By this, they also want to know whether your personal objectives align with the objectives of their company. So, make sure youve done your research right and are prepared to answer their questions.History about any of your previous jobs or Experiences. The interviewer asks about your previous jobs to know about your performance and see whether you are suitable for the job position or not. Make sure you tell him/her about all those about which youve written in your resume. N either more nor less, else it can lead to a problem. So make sure you answer accordingly.Reason for the gap between any two jobs.Answer such questions honestly whatever the reason may be whether due to sickness, any personal reason, oreven if you couldnt find work during that period. But you need to make sure you tell the interviewer what you had been doing in that time instead of telling him what you hadnt been doing then. It will have a positive impact on him. Dont give him the impression that youve been that time fooling around.Instead, tell convince him how this break was beneficial for you personally and professionally. The key thing during answering s uch resume based questions is maintaining a link between your resume and the opportunity. 10 toxic people you should avoid like the plague
10 toxic people you should avoid like the plague10 toxic people you should avoid like the plagueHave you dealt with toxic people at work? Tell us how you managed it at Ladders new Facebook group, The Climb.Toxic people defy logic. Some are blissfully unaware of the negative impact that they have on those around them, and others landseem to derive satisfaction from creating chaos and pushing other peoples buttons. As important as it is to learn how to deal with different kinds of people, truly toxic people will never be worth your time and energy - and they take a lot of each. Toxic people create unnecessary complexity, strife, and, worst of all, stress.People inspire you, or they drain you - pick them wisely. Hans F. HansenRecent research from Friedrich Schiller University in Germany shows just how serious toxic people are. They found that exposure to stimuli that cause strong negative emotions - the same kind of exposure you get when dealing with toxic people - caused subjects b rains to have a massive stress response.Whether its negativity, cruelty, the victim syndrome, or just plain craziness, toxic people drive your brain into a stressed-out state that should be avoided at all costs.Studies have long shown that stress can have a lasting, negative impact on the brain. Exposure to even a few days of stress compromises the effectiveness of neurons in the hippocampus, an important brain area responsible for reasoning and memory. Weeks of stress cause reversible damage to brain cells, and months of stress can permanently destroy them. Toxic people dont just make you miserable - theyre really hard on your brain. The ability to manage your emotions and remain calm under pressure has a direct link to your performance.TalentSmarthas conducted research with mora than a million people, and weve found that 90% of top performers are skilled at managing their emotions in times of stress in order to remain calm and in control. One of their greatest gifts is the ability to identify toxic people and keep them at bay.Its often said that youre the product of the five people you spend the most time with. If you allow even one of those five people to be toxic, youll soon find out how capable he or she is of holding you back. You cant hope to distance yourself from toxic people until you first know who they are. The trick is to separate those who are annoying or simply difficult from those who are truly toxic. What follows are ten types of toxic drainers that you should stay away from at all costs so that you dont become one yourself.1. The gossipGreat minds discuss ideas, average ones discuss events, and small minds discuss people. Eleanor RooseveltGossipers derive pleasure from other peoples misfortunes. It might be fun to peer into somebody elses personal or professional faux pas at first, but over time, it gets tiring, makes you feel gross, and hurts other people. There are too many positives out there and too much to learn from interesting people to waste your time talking about the misfortune of others.2. The temperamentalSome people have absolutely no control over their emotions. They will lash out at you and project their feelings onto you, all the while thinking that youre the one causing their malaise. Temperamental people are tough to dump from your life because their lack of control over their emotions makes you feel bad for them. When push comes to shove though, temperamental people will use you as their emotional toilet and should be avoided at all costs.3. The VictimVictims are tough to identify because you initially empathize with their problems. But as time passes, you begin to realize that their time of need isall the time. Victims actively push away any personal responsibility by making every speed bump they encounter into an uncrossable mountain. They dont see tough times as opportunities to learn and grow from instead, they see them as an out.Theres an old saying Pain is inevitable but suffering is optional. It perfectly captures the toxicity of the victim, who chooses to suffer every time.4. The self-absorbedSelf-absorbed people bring you down through the impassionate distance they maintain from other people. You can usually tell when youre hanging around self-absorbed people because you start to feel completely alone. This happens because as far as theyre concerned, theres no point in having a real connection between them and anyone else. Youre merely a tool used to build their self-esteem.5. The enviousTo envious people, the grass is always greener somewhere else. Even when something great happens to envious people, they dont derive any satisfaction from it. This is because they measure their fortune against the worlds when they should be deriving their satisfaction from within. And lets face it, theresalwayssomeone out there whos doing better if you look hard enough. Spending too much time around envious people is dangerous because they teach you to trivialize your own accomplishments.6. The manipulatorManipulators suck time and energy out of your life under the faade of friendship. They can be tricky to deal with because they treat you like a friend. They know what you like, what makes you happy, and what you think is funny, but the difference is that they use this information as part of a hidden agenda.Manipulators always want something from you, and if you look back on your relationships with them, its all take, take, take, with little or no giving. Theyll do anything to win you over just so they can work you over.7. The dementorIn J. K. Rowlings Harry Potter series, Dementors are evil creatures that suck peoples souls out of their bodies, leaving them merely as shells of humans. Whenever a Dementor enters the room, it goes dark, people get cold, and they begin to recall their worst memories. Rowling said that she developed the concept for Dementors based on highly negative people- the kind of people who have the ability to walk into a room and instantly suck th e life out of it.Dementors suck the life out of the room by imposing their negativity and pessimism upon everyone they encounter. Their viewpoints are always glass half empty, and they can inject fear and concern into even the most benign situations. A Notre Dame University study found that students assigned to roommates who thought negatively were far more likely to develop negative thinking and even depression themselves.8. The twistedThere are certain toxic people who have bad intentions, deriving deep satisfaction from the pain and misery of others. They are either out to hurt you, to make you feel bad, or to get something from you otherwise, they have no interest in you. The only good thing about this type is that you can spot their intentions quickly, which makes it that much faster to get them out of your life.9. Tell us how you managed it at Ladders new Facebook group, The Climb.10 toxic people you should avoid like the plagueToxic people defy logic. Some are blissfully unaware of the negative impact that they have on those around them, and others seem to derive satisfaction from creating chaos and pushing other peoples buttons. As import ant as it is to learn how to deal with different kinds of people, truly toxic people will never be worth your time and energy - and they take a lot of each. Toxic people create unnecessary complexity, strife, and, worst of all, stress.People inspire you, or they drain you - pick them wisely. Hans F. HansenRecent research from Friedrich Schiller University in Germany shows just how serious toxic people are. They found that exposure to stimuli that cause strong negative emotions - the same kind of exposure you get when dealing with toxic people - caused subjects brains to have a massive stress response.Whether its negativity, cruelty, the victim syndrome, or just plain craziness, toxic people drive your brain into a stressed-out state that should be avoided at all costs.Studies have long shown that stress can have a lasting, negative impact on the brain. Exposure to even a few days of stress compromises the effectiveness of neurons in the hippocampus, an important brain area resp onsible for reasoning and memory. Weeks of stress cause reversible damage to brain cells, and months of stress can permanently destroy them. Toxic people dont just make you miserable - theyre really hard on your brain. The ability to manage your emotions and remain calm under pressure has a direct link to your performance.TalentSmarthas conducted research with more than a million people, and weve found that 90% of top performers are skilled at managing their emotions in times of stress in order to remain calm and in control. The trick is to separate those who are annoying or simply difficult from those wh o are truly toxic. When push comes to shove tho ugh, temperamental people will use you as their emotional toilet and should be avoided at all costs.3. They know what you like, what makes you happy, and what you think is funny, but the difference is that they use this information as part of a hidden agenda.Manipulators always want something from you, and if you look back on your relationships with them, i ts all take, take, take, with little or no giving. Rowling said that she developed the concept for Dementors based on highly negative people- the kind of people who have the ability to walk into a room and instantly suck the life out of it.Dementors suck the life out of the room by imposing their negativity and pessimism upon everyone they encounter. Their viewpoints are always glass half empty, and they can inject fear and concern into even the most benign situations. A Notre Dame University study found that students assigned to roommates who thought negatively were far more likely to develop negative thinking and even depression themselv es.8. The judgmentalJudgmental people are quick to tell you exactly what is and isnt cool. They have a way of taking the thing youre most passionate about and making you feel terrible about it.Instead of appreciating and learning from people who are different from them, judgmental people look down on others. Do these 5 things to hire people who are emotionally intelligent
Do these 5 things to hire people who are emotionally intelligentDo these 5 things to hire people who are emotionally intelligentHiring decisions are among the most important you can make at work, because the costs associated with a bad hire are astronomical. The Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) predicts that every time a business replaces a salaried employee, the costs associated are six to nine months of that individuals salary. These are just the hard costs. A poor hire can have a devastating effect on the morale and productivity of others. Selecting a bad seed can have a profoundly toxic impact upon your organizations culture.Mark Zuckerberg describes his hiring process as followsI will only hire someone to work directly for me if I would work directly for that person.Zuckerbergs comment illustrates a fundamental, yet overlooked, truth about hiring- people cant perform their best unless they are working alongside someone they want to work with every day.Great hiring man agers pay special attention to leid just what candidates say, but what candidates do- both inside and outside of the bewerberinterview. This process, including the steps outlined below, can help ensure you select candidates who have high emotional intelligence (EQ). EQ is a critical skill that explains 58% of an individuals job performance. Its no wonder that 90% of top performers have high EQs.Dont let your next hiring decision be one that youll regret. The strategies that follow will help ensure you make a great hire.Learn to read body languageUCLA research has shown that only 7% of communication is based on the actual words we say. As for the rest, 38% comes from tone of voice and the remaining 55% comes from body language. Learning how to interpret body language gives you a leg up when you hire. Many tells, like raised eyebrows or a clenched jaw, reveal discomfort (even when words say otherwise), or what the candidate is really passionate about (i.e., mirrored body language and length of eye contact). These tells help you better understand whether your candidate is suited for the role. Learning to recognize candidates subtle mannerisms can give you an extra edge in evaluating who you should hire.Spot evidence of high and low EQ behaviorsOnce you learn to spot behaviors indicative of the four emotional intelligence skills self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, and relationship management skills, youre a big step ahead. For example, a candidate who repeats a question back to you to confirm he/she understood it correctly is demonstrating good relationship management. While thats just one small behavior, piecing many together over the course of an interview paints a clear picture of who you should hire. If you have a number of candidates with the same level of technical skills, then these EQ skills are the deciding factor that will rule someone in and out.Interview OUTSIDE of the interviewPay special attention to how candidates behave before, durin g, and after the interview. How do they treat your staff? Seemingly small behaviors provide valuable information on how a candidate will fit in with your employees, as well as how theyll treat your customers.Ask probing questionsMany interviewers have the same question bank they use for all candidate interviews- with some job-specific questions sprinkled in. You already have the candidates resume in front of you, and the interview is your opportunity to probe deeper and get beyond technical skills and background. Asking layers of probing questions will help you understand how the candidate adapts to change and challenges. The key to probing deeper during an interview is to go beyond candidates canned responses to your questions. When a candidate answers a question by providing an example or a story, ask them things like why they chose to do it that way and how they would do it differently next time. Their answers will show you how self-aware they are, how they influence others aroun d them, and how they seek to improve over time.Pool feedbackRecognize that your current employees are going to have to work with the new hire every single day, so ask them for feedback. You should glean information from everyone who had contact with the candidate throughout the hiring process. After all, youre looking for someone who will complement the team holistically, rather than just filling a skills gap. Show your current employees that you value their opinions and happiness at work.Bringing it all togetherEmotional intelligence is just one piece in the hiring puzzle, but its an important one. When you use it to nail the right hire, you minimize the risk of absorbing toxicity, poor performance, and turnover. Moreover, bringing in high-EQ individuals elevates the performance of existing employees and helps build the culture that you want for your company.WANT TO INTEGRATE EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE INTO YOUR HIRING PROCESS?TalentSmart is thrilled to announce the launch of our new p rogram, Hiring For Emotional Intelligence. Its a one-day training that gives recruiters and hiring managers all the tools they need to select candidates who are high in emotional intelligence. Attendees learn how to spot qualified candidates with high EQs, hone their radar for evidence of low EQ behaviors to avoid hiring toxic individuals, and measure a candidates fit for your organizations culture. This column originally appeared on LinkedIn.
